AI & tutoring

AI should support the lesson, not replace it.

A good tutor does what no model can: they listen, correct you in the moment, and adapt to how you learn. Phraseback does not try to replace that. It captures the lesson your tutor gave and turns it into a calm learning journal, so the value of every session lasts well beyond the hour.

The tutor stays central

Human tutoring gives what a model cannot — live correction, judgment, and encouragement. Phraseback's job is to make that work last: helping you remember, review, and notice more long after the lesson ends.

Your sessions are not training data

Audio, transcripts, and insights are processed to provide the service. We do not use them to train AI models or sell them to advertisers.

Nothing joins your call

There is no meeting bot, no silent participant, and no live judgment layer. You decide when to record.

For learners

Is AI replacing my tutor?

No. Phraseback isn't part of the lesson — it records it, then does its work afterward. It keeps the useful language moments that are easy to miss while you are speaking.

Will the app judge me while I speak?

No. Phraseback does not coach over the top of your lesson. It turns a recording into notes afterward, so the call can stay human.

Can the insights be wrong?

Yes. AI can make mistakes, especially with noisy audio, mixed languages, or subtle cultural context. Treat insights as learning aids, not as a replacement for your tutor's judgment.

For tutors

Is this trying to replace tutors?

No — that part can't be automated. The live feedback, the read of the room, the relationship a student builds with you: a model has none of it. Phraseback's role is to make your work go further, so students retain more from each lesson and come back better prepared.

Will my voice be used to train an AI tutor?

No. We do not use session audio, transcripts, or tutor speech to train AI models, clone voices, or build tutor replacements.

Should tutors know when a session is recorded?

Yes. Students are responsible for making sure everyone in the session knows and agrees to the recording, in line with local laws and platform norms.

How it works

A narrow path from audio to notes.

1. The learner records the lesson

The learner — not the tutor — starts the recording from the desktop app. It captures the call audio only when they press record, never on its own.

2. Audio is transcribed

We send the recording to OpenAI only to transcribe it. OpenAI does not use it for training and does not retain transcription requests after processing. Once Phraseback has created your transcript and learning notes, we delete the recording from our storage.

3. The transcript becomes learning notes

The transcript is sent to Anthropic for insight extraction: Nuance Cards, gentle corrections, cultural notes, and practice prompts.

4. The journal remains yours

Transcripts and insights stay in your Phraseback account while it is active. You can delete your account from Settings.

Plain boundaries

What Phraseback does not do.

  • It does not train AI models on your sessions.
  • It does not sell your data or share it with advertisers.
  • It does not clone tutors, voices, or teaching styles.
  • It does not join calls as a bot or hidden participant.
  • It does not certify language level or replace tutor feedback.
